Cataracts

Blurred vision could be a sign of cataracts. At the office of Optical Outlets, we can provide a proper diagnosis and make sure you get the care you need!

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are films that form in the lens of the eye that can impair your vision. This is a very common condition for both men and women aged 60 and over. If you do have cataracts, rest assured, they can be removed and your vision will be restored.

What Causes Cataracts?

Cataracts form due to a breakdown of the protein in the lens of your eye. This is a normal part of the aging process and usually develops slowly, over time. When the protein breaks down it can result in cloudy vision.

Some other causes of cataracts include:
• Family history of cataracts
• Diabetes
• Certain eye injuries
• Sun damage
• Certain medications such as corticosteroids

It’s always important to wear anti-UV ray sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun. This can even help slow the development of cataracts. We can discuss with you the best ways to care for your eyes and provide a referral if you would like to get more information about cataract surgery.

Getting a Cataract Diagnosis

We will perform an eye exam to determine if you do have cataracts. You may have them in one or both eyes. If you do, we will refer you to an ophthalmologist to determine if surgery is right for you. Sometimes glasses alone are all that’s needed to correct the vision issue. However, it can be very helpful to have the cataracts removed if you are having trouble seeing or driving or performing your every day activities. It’s typically not an emergency procedure, so you can take time to consider your surgical options in care.

Suffering with an Eye Allergy

Many people suffer with eyes that are red, watery, itchy, tearing or burning. Often these conditions are caused by eye allergies, also called allergic conjunctivitis. While a great many people with these symptoms just ignore them and assume that they are simply due to another condition such as a cold or nasal issue, they may in fact be the result of an allergy. At the office of Optical Outlets we can diagnose an eye allergy, as well as prescribe treatments to alleviate your discomfort.

Eye allergies are brought on by exposure to an allergen, which can be triggered by either indoor or outside irritants. Eye allergies develop when the body’s immune system becomes sensitized and overreacts to something in the environment that typically causes no problem in most people. An allergic reaction can occur when that “something” comes in contact with antibodies attached to the mast cells in your eyes. The cells respond by releasing histamine and other substances or chemicals that cause tiny blood vessels to leak and the eyes to become itchy, red and watery. Indoor triggers include items such as pet dander, dust mites and mold, while outside allergens include pollen from grass, trees and weeds. Irritants such as smoke, perfume, car and truck exhaust, as well as diesel fumes, can also cause eye allergies. Because eye allergies can exhibit similar symptoms to other diseases of the eye, it’s important to visit our eye doctor for an eye examination to attain an accurate diagnosis. If swollen blood vessels and inflammation of the conjunctiva is present, it’s possible that you are suffering with an eye allergy. Depending on the severity of the allergy, there are many treatment options, ranging from over-the-counter eye drops to prescription medications that are designed to calm the allergy. Of course, identifying and avoiding the trigger allergens is an essential component of care.

Just like the clothes you wear give people a sense of your style, glasses are an integral part of your overall look. You want a style that reflects your personality and how you want others to perceive you. The right glasses can help you make the right first impression!

With the pressure of conveying the look you want, it can be overwhelming to walk into an eyeglasses store and make a decision. You may want different looks for different occasions. Designer frames can make the look! Here are a few tips for your decision-making process.

When choosing a frame, consider the different uses you may have, the style you like, and the image you want to project. As a guide, there are some specific shapes and colors to keep in mind as you test out the looks:
• For a professional, conservative look consider classic shapes like oval, round, and almond, and simple colors such as gold, silver, brown, black, and grey.
• For a creative look, consider modern shapes like geometric designs in thicker, multicolored frames.
• For a retro look, consider an oversized shape.
• For a younger look, consider colors like gunmetal, deep browns, a with a shiny hue.

No matter what style (or styles) you ultimately choose, be sure to ask us about the various types of lenses available. For example, polarized sunglass lenses can reduce glare while other tints can help with different situations. We can give you our opinion on your best look—and can guide you in the type of lenses to best fit your needs. So come shopping with us today!

Examination to Identify CVS

As everyone can agree, advances in computer technology improve productivity, give us greater access to entertainment and allow us to be in touch easily with family and friends. While the advantages of technological progress are evident, it’s important to acknowledge that there are also health consequences associated with increased screen time. Looking at a computer, cellphone, tablet or e-reader for too many hours a day can affect your eyesight, causing what is called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). If you experience eye strain, irritation, headaches or difficulty seeing when using a digital device, visit us at the office Optical Outlets. We’ll perform a comprehensive examination to identify CVS and determine an effective approach to treatment.

While computers can make life easier, you’d be surprised to know that they can create many challenges for your eyes. Your eyes have to work hard as they focus at the same distance point for a prolonged period and may become fatigued. Flickering screens and glare create added strain, and switching your focus from paper to screen also require your eyes to rapidly adjust. If you have an existing vision impairment, CVS may be more pronounced. If you’re experiencing symptoms of CVS, schedule an appointment with our office. We’ll perform a comprehensive exam to rule out other conditions and create a treatment plan to alleviate the symptoms. In some cases, you may be required to wear specialized lenses for computer use only. If you wear corrective lenses already, your prescription may be modified or you may need a new prescription for computer use. Simple adjustments, such as altering the brightness or contrast on your screen, enlarging font size and changes in lighting to minimize glare can also help mitigate CVS. As skilled and experienced providers of care, we take the time to advise you as to how you can create a healthier computer-viewing environment.

Keeping your Eyes Healthy

Spending long hours focused on a computer screen, phone or tablet can take a toll on your eye health and vision. If you’re experiencing headaches, eye irritation, eye fatigue or blurred vision when using a digital device, you may have Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). Our team at the office of Optical Outlets can help guide you towards better practices for keeping your eyes healthy while using a computer and can prescribe corrective lenses or vision therapy if needed.

With the increasing use of technology in today’s face paced workplace, it’s important to address some of the health consequences associated with prolonged time spent in front of a screen. Prioritizing your health while working at a computer is essential to your overall well-being. Digital displays can require the eyes to work harder in a number of ways. Focusing on the same distance point for an uninterrupted length of time can strain the eyes. Screen glare, contrast and flickering lights can also create visual challenges. When you visit our office for a comprehensive examination, we’ll discuss how to create the optimal environment for using your computer to reduce strain on your eyes. Simple changes like adjusting computer height, changing room lighting to reduce glare and enlarging font size can help give your eyes a break. For many, following the 20-20-20 rule helps mitigate symptoms of CVS. This means for every 20 minutes you spend looking at screen, spend 20 seconds viewing something that is 20 feet away. During your exam, we’ll also be able to identify other vision and eye health problems that may be exacerbating CVS. In some cases we may prescribe glasses or contacts for computer use only. If you already wear glasses, your lenses can be coated with an anti-glare material.

Corrective Eye Treatment

Are you sick of wearing contacts or glasses to correct your vision, but unsure if surgery is right for you? At the office of Optical Outlets, we can talk to you about another, non-surgical option called ortho-k.

What is Ortho-k?
Ortho-k is short for orthokeratology. It’s a non-surgical, corrective eye treatment prescribed by our office. The great thing about ortho-k is that unlike LASIK, it does not require a surgical procedure. Instead, ortho-k is a process that corrects vision using a special contact lens that reshapes the cornea.

What’s involved?
To determine if ortho-k is a good option for you, your doctor will complete a thorough eye exam to ensure your eyes are healthy and check your vision. If you and your doctor think you are a good candidate for ortho-k, the next step is to get fitted for the lenses. Typically, you will be instructed to wear the lenses at night for about one to four weeks. Throughout this period, you will have regular check ups to ensure the lenses are working correctly.

Is Ortho-k Right for You?
Ortho-k is usually recommended to correct nearsightedness. Some questions to think about when considering if ortho-k is right for you include:
• Do your have a hard time wearing contact lenses due to allergies or dry eye?
• Do your contacts or glasses get in the way of working, playing sports, or going about your daily activities?
• Is your eyesight getting worse every year?
• Would you prefer not to have contacts or glasses?

If you answered yes to these questions, ortho-k may be a good choice for you. It is a safe alternative to surgery that can have a positive impact on your life. Talk to us about it, and we can help you make an informed decision.

Understanding Computer Vision Syndrome

At the office of Optical Outlets, we provide care to help patients enjoy optimal vision and protect the health of their eyes.

Let’s face it, for many of us looking at a digital screen is a fact of daily life. And, while the benefits of modern technology are undeniable, it’s also becoming increasingly evident that dependence on these devices has consequences on one’s health and overall well-being. With problematic issues such as harsh screen contrast, flicker, and glare, the visual challenges of computer use are numerous. You can also strain your eyes by focusing at the same distance for a lengthy period, or when you shift your gaze from papers on the desk to back up at the screen.

Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is the name given to a group of eye problems and vision-related symptoms caused by prolonged use of hi-tech digital screen devices.

Symptoms of computer vision syndrome, also referred to as digital eyestrain, may include:
• Eye Irritation (dry eyes, itchy eyes, red eyes)
• Double Vision
• Blurred Vision
• Headaches
• Neck, shoulder, or back pain

While computer vision syndrome can affect one’s performance at work, in school, and at home, simple steps such as scheduling regular eye care at our office and establishing healthy computer habits, helps prevent any vision or musculoskeletal problems.

When examining your eyes and assessing your vision, we’ll determine if you need a new prescription for corrective lenses or a special one for working on the computer. We’ll provide guidance on preventing and alleviating symptoms of computer vision syndrome. You’ll also be advised of measures that can be taken to improve your computer-viewing environment and given helpful recommendations about giving your eyes a periodic break.
